The Treasure Mine Tour includes education about mining in North Carolina. Did you know the gold rush started right here in our state?  Students will participate in interactive outdoor classroom learning while investigating the differences between rocks and minerals and the life cycle of rocks. Students will have a hands-on learning experience at the Mining Sluice, where they will discover and identify various minerals and gemstones.  Each student will receive a bag of mining rough.  Paydirt Pete’s Treasure Mine was designed and hand built by the Petersons especially for field trips.  Water runs through the unique water tower through a series of troughs.  Participants will take their bag of mining “rough” and pour it into a sluice box, shift and shake their box, and the water will wash the dirt away slowly revealing their found treasure. After discovering their own gems from around the world, participants will be given an identification card to accurately identify exactly what they found.  They will be able to take their treasures and ID Card home.

During the fall season (Sept. 16 – Nov. 11), the mining tour does include access to our 10+ acre corn maze.  You also have an option to add a small pumpkin to the tour.
